- Do your homework when deciding which host to move your website to. Moving your site to a new host is a lot of work so you don’t want to have to do it too often. Choose a new web host that offers room for expansion if your business grows.
- Give yourself plenty of time to make the change over to the new host. Even though it means one month of double expenses, it is a good idea to start services with your new host one month before discontinuing services with your old host. This will give you 30 days to work out any problems at the new site.
- Pack up your business at your current hosting site by making copies of all of your web pages and files on CD. Arrange to have services you were using and don’t need any more to be disconnected at the end of the month.

- Review the design. Design is the first thing you notice when you open the website. Is it appealing? Does the color scheme work? Consider how easy it is to navigate the site. Share your opinion on how the design and navigation work. Did you find anything that didn’t work? If so, make note of it.

Read through several pages of the website’s content, like anything that is published professionally, it should be free of grammatical, spelling and formatting errors.
- Evaluate the website for its overall effectiveness. Can you as the user easily accomplish your reason for visiting the website? Was the information or product you were searching for easy to find? Was that information up to date and accurate?
- Most websites will have an “About Us” page or other page that introduces the company, its qualifications and writer’s profiles. Is the website written by one or multiple authors? With as much information that is available on the Internet, it is important to understand whether the website is accurate and that the writers are qualified to write about the content displayed. Can you easily discover whether they are qualified to write about the website’s purpose? Writers should have their own byline or profile page.
- Beyond the basics. If your audience is a group of website developers or other group of information technology professionals, you should delve a little deeper in your analysis of the website. Along with the basics discussed in the previous steps, you should discuss: color schemes, alignment and visual organization; marketing capabilities and branding; functions of widgets, forms and html; browser capability and resolution.
- Domain hosting, also known as website hosting or DNS hosting, can best be described this way: if a website is a home, and a web address is the street address, then a domain host is the land a home sits on.
Domain hosting is an Internet service provided by a DNS (Domain Name System) server. The DNS server, in simple terms, is a large capacity computer that stores files. - Contact your Internet service provider and request a static IP address. Static IP addresses may cost extra, but some providers do include it in their service. Consult your provider to configure your computer with the new static IP address.
- Shop for a domain name registrar. Compare pricing among companies to save money. Two places to find registrars are the websites for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, and InterNIC (see the Resource section).
- Register your domain name online with the company you chose. Specify the static IP address on the web form that should be associated with the domain name. Call the customer service department if the form doesn’t have space for the IP address.
If you have a previously registered domain name, contact the company used to register it and request your static IP address be assigned to your domain.
Building A Website On Yahoo!
- Yahoo! offers fairly reasonable web hosting and domain name registration fees, as well as a free website builder with many templates to choose from. After the template is paid for, you will receive an email with download instructions. The purchased template can be edited and fully customized.
